Things to Do for the Family in December

It's December and the kids just got out of school for Christmas. Maybe you are new to the area and you are wondering what you're going to do with all this free time that's just opened up for the whole family (or maybe you are too busy holiday prepping to even think about it). Whatever it is, Wilmington has plenty of events happening in the area and options for things to do (besides just going to the beach for the day) so that you and your kid(s) can have the chance to do something different rather than feeling stuck in the house every day.

If you're dealing with any of the stress that these moms are, then maybe it's time to have a family outing--even if just for a few hours.

Here is a list of some spots that you may or may not have heard about that are located right here in the Wilmington area. These spots are kid-friendly and are perfect for a family outing or even just for one parent and the kids.

1. The Serpentarium

Location:
20 Orange Street
Wilmington, NC 28401

The Serpentarium is a self-guided tour through an exotic reptile facility that features some insane exhibits, including some of the world's rarest and deadliest snacks, crocodiles, alligator snapping turtles, dragons, lizards, and more. The exhibits also have information about them, so not only do you get to view these rare animals, you also get to learn more about them. This location is perfect for the curious reptile lover.

Hours: 11 am to 5 pm Wednesday-Sunday (the last admission is one hour to closing time)
Price: $9 for the general public; $8 for seniors, educators, and dependents; FREE for active military and children 4 years and under

 2. The Wilmington Railroad Museum

Location:
505 Nutt Street
Wilmington, NC 28401

Does your kid love to play with trains? If so, look no further. Dedicated to preserving the history of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and railroading in the United States in general, this museum has a collection of displays, which would prove to be educational for adults and children alike. Once you're done perusing through the displays, there's also a Thomas the Tank Train play area, a life-size caboose, boxcar, 100-year-old steam locomotive, and more.

The Wilmington Railroad museum not only offers just a general tour through the museum, but they also host other museum activities, like story time on the first and third Mondays of the month.
