Things to Do Wilmington: Bellamy Mansion

Let's say you have a free weekend and you know that the weather is going to be gorgeous. Why not visit one of Wilmington's most shining examples of antebellum architecture? Built between 1859-1861, this twenty room historic house is the highlight as you come to the heart of downtown Wilmington. Most visitors may even find themselves gawking as they pass by due to its large presences at the corner of 5th and Market Street downtown.

I mean, even if the weather isn't the most ideal, spending a couple of hours exploring this huge house downtown is like stepping back into a piece of Wilmington and United States history, with large Corinthian columns and various blinds and window draping, ordered from the big city of New York.

History at Bellamy Mansion

During the time Bellamy Mansion was built, it was the largest city in North Carolina (shocking, actually) and was number one in the world for the naval sales industry (see our blog on the Battleship for more about Wilmington's claim to a piece of naval history). Dr. John Bellamy along with his large family, for whom the house was named, decided to hire an architect to construct this beautiful piece of history and by October of 1859, construction took place, setting this house apart from all others. Slaves, several freed black artisans, and other skilled carpenters from the area came in take part in history, by helping to get this home finished by 1861. While the home was constructed in a very classic style, Dr. Bellamy was also invested in making sure that his family lived in comfort by using more modernized amenities, innovations that were not common in other households.

Although there were these types of modernities, the home still had its three sectors: the main house where the Bellamy family lived, the slave quarters, and the carriage house, all built by a number of men contracted to help.
